Dr. Barnard received his medical training at George Washington University School of Medicine in Psychiatry, where he began to explore food and diets and more latterly, veganism. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a lifetime member of the American Medical Association.
Dr. Barnard founded the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) in 1985 – because of his desire to promote preventive medicine. As president of that committee he is involved in numerous programmes advocating greater application of preventive medicine, good nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research.
Dr. Barnard, is the author of over 70 scientific publications as well as 17 books and led numerous research studies investigating the effects of diet on body weight, and chronic pain, including a groundbreaking study of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institute of Health.
