Principles of Breathwork is an introduction to the basics of breath and breathing therapy. It clearly explains how an understanding of breathing techniques can be applied to a number of therapeutic treatments for mind and body. When we breathe freely and easily our respiratory and circulatory systems distribute life giving oxygen through the body. At times of stress, however, our bodies tense up, inhibiting circulation and reducing the size of each breath. As a result the balance of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the blood is altered for the worse. Energy levels plummet and a cycle of stress/lethargy becomes the norm. Principles of Breathwork looks at how complimentary therapies such as Yoga, Alexander Technique, Bioenergetics and ancient traditional medicines understand the importance of breath and breathing. Also included are explanations for:
* how breathing is the bridge between body and mind
* how our breathing is connected to our unconscious
* how breathing techniques can heal pain and disease
* how simple breathing exercises can revitalise and energise
Swami Ambikanander is a Yoga teacher, acupuncturist and herbalist and runs her own private practice. She is also a Hindu monk who has been teaching yoga and Vedanta philosophy for over 25 years. Many years ago she came to the realisation that without dealing with the breath and the breathing habits of each patient healing possibilities were significantly reduced. Hence her integration of breath therapy into her work. She runs 'Conscious Breathing' workshops throughout the UK to help individuals master the subtle art of breathing with intention. Swami Ambikanander has also written a variety of books on yoga, the Upanishads, the Gita and other spiritual topics.
