How The Scheme Works - Update

 

Background

We have been running a variety of training programmes for over 20 years, which participants have been able to use towards their Continued Professional Development (CPD) where necessary – and in just as many cases purely for their own personal development.

We have now converted our primary training programme into 10 modules, which will be the foundation for those who wish to become Reach associates. Successful candidates will acquire a Post Graduate Certificate in Holistic and Integrative Psychotherapy, accredited by NCP (National Council of Psychotherapists). It will be necessary for the student to complete all 10 modules to become part of our franchise scheme. This scheme, is not about increasing numbers, it’s about maintaining the quality we’ve established whilst extending what we do to those parts of the country (and the world) where access to our services is limited or non-existent. 

It should be stated for clarity that those who undertake our training programme are not required to become franchisees.

 

The Reason for the Scheme

Although we currently have 65 practitioners within Reach (12 partners and 53 associates), this is a drop in the ocean compared to the need that exists. We have countless examples of those who want to more directly access our services and we simply have not been able to meet that need. Although telephone counselling and Skype have helped bridge some of those gaps, there is still no substitute, where possible, for face-to-face contact as there’s a quality of intimacy that one can enjoy that no other media quite replicate.

So although in our overseas work (this applies to parts of the UK too) we are almost entirely dependent upon Skype, telephone and email contact, we are hoping through this scheme, that by creating franchisees who become associates of Reach, more people seeking access to our way of working can enjoy the face-to-face option when it comes to resolving their issues.

Although our focus in this first phase is here in the UK, we are already in discussions with individuals in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, North and South America, Africa and a number of European countries. And so we are not turning away any serious interest from overseas.

 

The Postgraduate Certificate

The minimum number of hours required for successful completion of the certificate is 120.

Our training programme is, to a large degree, tailor-made for each student and so it is difficult to be precise about the number of hours required to successfully complete all 10 modules.  This is going to be subject to the student's previous knowledge, background and experience, as well as their familiarity with our material. 

As a guide, based on our experience, each module will take at least 4 one and a half hour sessions to complete. Students should expect the recommended reading, research and writing up of assignments will be a significant part of the course requirement.

Because of the personalized nature of the course, it should be underlined that the 10 core modules could also take longer if the student chooses to undertake the journey at a slower pace or they find some modules more demanding to absorb and comprehend. 

 

The Postgraduate Diploma

Those wishing to acquire the postgraduate diploma will be expected to undertake a further 240 hours of training.  This involves revisiting the 10 modules at a much deeper level. 

Course participants will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of our holistic and integrative approach using current case studies as part of their learning process. 

In addition, candidates will be required to complete a research project of their choice relating to an aspect of the course.  This research project, which will be supervised, is expected to take 100-120 hours.

We want the training experience to be as versatile as possible so that it is reaching the widest possible audience and is enjoyable and fulfilling for the participants.

Eligibility

The minimum requirement for entry into the training programme is a diploma, advanced diploma or postgraduate diploma in counselling/psychotherapy.

Applicants need to be either already accredited or eligible for accreditation with BACP, UKCP or NCP.  Knowledge, qualifications and experience in other related fields will also be taken into consideration. So other professionals involved with the talking-therapies and mental health will be considered should our courses appeal to them.

Overseas applicants will be assessed on their individual merits - due to differences in qualifications, accreditation procedures, governing bodies and relevant legislation.  So please contact us if you are in any doubt about your suitability.

Each interested party will be interviewed by two or more members of the senior management team, to assess their suitability for this unique opportunity.

 

Costs

At the outset, all tuition will be one-to-one. This is largely to ensure we can adapt to the individual needs of each applicant. It’s important to us, particularly at this phase in the development of the programme, that we get the right people and help them to develop in a way that’s consistent with our philosophy and approach. It goes without saying, that unless students are really interested in and passionate about our work, it makes no sense for them to apply.

We’re not looking to change what we do (although what we do keeps evolving) we’re looking for people who ‘get’ where we’re coming from and are interested in developing in a truly integrative and holistic way.

We are not anti any other approaches and are not promoting the idea that ‘our model is better than your model’, after all our whole approach is built on co-operation and collaboration. But equally, our synergistic philosophy is not something we’re willing to compromise on either.

As said earlier, we envisage that at least 4 sessions will be needed to complete each module. Each training session will be one and a half hours in duration and will cost £60.00, which we consider to be a very modest price for what is on offer. But because the length of tuition may vary subject to how long the individual takes completing each module, the total costs will also reflect that.

It will be a requirement for those who want to become franchisees (associates of Reach) that their supervision (post training) takes place with a Reach practitioner and so they will also have to factor in £60.00 for one and a half hours supervision per month.  For practitioners working at this level, this is not an additional cost because it’s what they would be required to do, given the requirements of BACP, NCP and UKCP.

If the individual is already in practice when they start the programme, and therefore have their own supervision arrangements in place, these at some point will have to be altered, if they are to become a Reach franchisee.

Course participants are not required to pay any fees up front, because they will pay for the training programme each time they attend a training session.  This we hope will make managing the costs of the programme easier for those interested in undertaking the training.

 

Signing Up

Individuals may opt to undertake the 10 modules but then choose not to sign up to the scheme for various reasons or may not have met the minimum standard we require. Signing up means paying a £60.00 monthly fee for the lifetime of their involvement with Reach. This gives the franchisee on-going support and access to what is a vast array of resources, that have been developed over nearly 40 years, which include:

Handouts, CDs, MP3s, videos, access to research past and present, support in building their arm of the practice, exposure on the main Reach website, localized SEO to aid their marketing, on-going training in order to get the best out of our model and approach, and much more... Many franchises operate on the basis of taking a percentage of the franchisee’s income after some initial 'buy-in' figure, which generally is many thousands of pounds. We have decided to do this in a simpler way, making what we're offering more affordable and accessible to a wider audience. 

We decided on the flat figure of £60 that is paid each month because we are not looking to exploit anyone, 'getting rich' on the back of other people’s work. It would be to our advantage to have a ‘buy-in’ figure and then be taking a percentage. Our research has shown this would generate a far greater income stream, but exclude probably many of the people we're trying to reach. 

This £60 per month will make successful graduates Associate members of Reach, and will afford them on-going access to our huge range of resources and a variety of other benefits - some of which are listed below in the summary section below.

In relation to what’s being offered, we believe this is a very modest fee (which we won't increase) because the franchisee is buying into a well established brand which will help them to develop a reputation and credibility much more quickly than they could by themselves. And it will help us to keep funding the many free services we offer that support the work we do with clients and the general public.

All those who wish to join this scheme will be required to sign a 'plain-speaking' contract, which briefly and clearly lays out the terms and conditions (a copy of this contract is available for all interested parties).

 

When Can I Start to Practise in The Reach Approach?

If the franchisee is undertaking the training and being supervised by us from the start, then subject to their background and experience they could begin practising in The Reach Approach straightaway.

We have found over the years that the best way to integrate training into practice is to be practising. If the person is not under our supervision, then practising using our materials and resources would have to begin once they’d completed all 10 modules (Postgraduate Certificate) because we wouldn’t be evaluating their client work first-hand during their training. So obviously the ideal starting position is to be supervised by a senior member of Reach, whilst undergoing our training programme.

On-going supervision with Reach is a non-negotiable requirement of being part of the scheme as this will be the primary way that we ensure standards are maintained.  This will help to avoid some of the abuse of our materials and resources as well as the misrepresentations of our work that have in the past taken place.

SUMMARY

 

i) 10 modules that can be completed in a timescale to suit your individual circumstances.

ii) A unique, well researched model integrating past and present, science and spirituality and the latest developments in the mind-body connection.

iii) Successful students can become Associates of Reach.

iv) Minimum requirement for entry to the scheme - diploma/advanced diploma or post graduate diploma in counselling/psychotherapy.  Relevant associated disciplines will also be considered.

v) Students need to be accredited or eligible for accreditation with BACP, NCP or UKCP.

vi) On-going supervision on completion of training with a Reach practitioner is an essential requirement. Current cost £60 for one and a half hours – this figure will be reviewed annually.

vii) £60 per month for the life-time of one’s involvement in the scheme, paid by direct debit or standing order, to maintain the franchisee’s participation in the scheme.

viii) All franchisees will have on-going access to Reach research, resources, materials and products either free of charge or at cost.

ix) Inclusion on Reach’s main website with SEO specific to franchisee’s locality.

x) Support in marketing and promoting franchisee’s practice - access to our accountancy services and favourable rates for indemnity insurance.

xi) Although each franchisee will sign a contract they can leave the scheme at any time, giving one month’s notice. However, on leaving the scheme they cannot continue to operate under the Reach name or continue to use our materials and resources without our permission.

xii) Anyone in breach of the terms and conditions would be asked to leave the scheme with immediate effect.
